Our Master Cobbler Featured in Vita.mn
The man behind the Greenwich Vintage shoes, Tamas "Zen" Pomazi, was profiled in Vita.mn.
Q: What first drew you to the old-world craft of shoe cobbling?
A: I have always been a sneakerhead and was customizing sneakers for a living. At the same time, I was turning toward a more vintage and "grown man" look with my personal style. I was starting to wear the same type of shoes my grandfather wore and wanted to take that to the next level. I realized I could turn my love of shoes in general into a true craft by making a traditional dress shoe into something more.
Q: Your company, Greenwich Vintage, is known for its brightly colored soles. How did you come up with that idea?
A: I was already customizing sneakers, but they are a more casual look. I realized there was a missing market with men's dress shoes. Men's dress shoes are generally boring. I knew we could do more. We started with the colored sole, but we also can modify the upper with fabric or dye.
Q: The Twin Cities is enjoying something of a renaissance in the so-called "heritage" menswear movement. What do you make of this?
A: Minnesota has historically been the home for some great American-made brands that have stood the test of time. Dollars are scarce in today's world. I want to spend my money on menswear that can, will and maybe already has stood the test of time.
Q: What are some of the Twin Cities' best-kept secrets?
A: The Monte Carlo -- get the chicken wings! Quang for the deep-fried sweet yams, Marvel Bar for drinks, and Eat Street Social for last call.
